Characteristics of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) care for newborns

       Characteristics of NICU
                  care for newborns

The patient population in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) mainly consists of extremely low birth weight premature infants, newborns with birth asphyxia, and critically ill newborns with various congenital abnormalities. The Taipei Veterans General Hospital
has successfully discharged the smallest premature infant born at 22 weeks and 6 days gestation, weighing 402 grams. One of the distinguishing features of the hospital is the availability of flexible bronchoscopy examinations and interventions, allowing for timely diagnosis and treatment of respiratory emergencies in newborns, as well as difficult extubation cases. Patients come from all over
Taiwan and even from overseas.
The nursing care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is very different from general nursing care. When caring for these
fragile premature infants and newborns, more delicate and meticulous care actions are required, such as supportive positioning,
kangaroo care, and control of light and noise. These seemingly insignificant actions are crucial for the growth of premature infants.
The NICU at Taipei Veterans General Hospital also places great emphasis on interdisciplinary care. In addition to medical
professionals, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, dietitians, and other healthcare providers all play
indispensable roles in providing the best care for these tiny patients.
