Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Department

Number of beds: 63

The department contains 3 divisions:

Otology, Rhinology-Head and Neck Surgery, Laryngology-Head and Neck Surgery

Otorhinolarynology Division was originally under Surgery Department, became independent in 1975 and was elevated as Otorhinolarynology Department in 1989.

After reorganization in 2013, now the name was Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Department with three divisions of Otology, Rhinology-Head and Neck Surgery, Laryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

The Otology Division provides specialized surgery in many aspects: 1.”Tailor-made mastoidectomy with cartilage reconstruction” is developed for the treatment of cholesteatoma. Without compromising the hearing outcome and to prevent recurrence, the tailor-made mastoidectomy reconstructs mastoid structures as possible. 2. We develop minimally invasive transcanal middle ear microsurgery for chronic otitis media. The advantages include smaller wound, better wound healing, and shorter recovery time. The treatment results are satisfactory. 3. For otosclerosis, laser assisted minimally invasive surgical technique has been developed to minimize the complications of surgery; 4. Cochlear implant is indicated in moderate to severe hearing handicapped. We are experienced in cochlear implant operation and excellent results have been achieved. 5. We cooperate with neurosurgeon to remove cerebellopontine angle tumors through translabyrinthine approach. The surgical approach may maintain the function of many vulnerable cranial nerves, including facial nerve and the treatment outcome is excellent. Not only the achievements in surgery, we also offer outpatient services: 1. “The Hearing Scale Test” can quickly screen the patient’s hearing status; 2. Laboratory examinations such as nystagmography, vestibular function test, posturography, caloric stimulation, and VEMP, were used to explore the cause of vertigo and the balance; 3. We have specialized outpatient service of tinnitus and aural rehabilitation, which promotes desensitization therapy to achieve the best therapeutic effect. In the future, we will keep working hard in clinical research and educational aspects, in order to provide the best quality of medical care.

The Rhinology-Head and Neck Surgery Division works to develop various kinds of skull base and craniofacial surgeries and to adopt compound therapy to enhance survival and quality of life for patients with head and neck cancer. We renovate intranasal endoscopic  surgery for treatment of rhinitis, sinusitis, orbital decompression, dacryocystorhinostomy, cerebrospinal fluid leakage repair, and resection of tumors in nasal cavity, paranasal sinus and skull base by using microdebrider and navigation system to make it more exquisite and safer. Radiofrequency surgery will treat allergic rhinitis, chronic hypertrophic rhinitis, and hypertrophy of tongue base related obstructive sleep apnea syndrome more effectively. Currently we have developedrhinoplasty and hyaluronic acid injection for better service of patients.

The Laryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Division has accomplished the following achievements: 1. wide use of CO 2 laser microsurgery for the treatment of early and moderately advanced pharyngeal cancer, laryngeal cancer and oral cavity cancer to keep speech and swallowing functions of the pharynx and larynx; 2. establishment of multi-disciplinary head and neck cancer therapeutic team to treat advanced stage head and neck cancer (including oral cancer) with chemotherapy and radiotherapy and to participate international clinical trials; 3. identification of small tumor with narrow band imaging for early diagnosis and therapy of head and neck cancers; 4. developing endoscopic fiberscopic surgery for the benign vocal fold lesions under local anesthesia in outpatient basis. Our department also provides head and ncek ultrasonography (including thyroid), transnasal esophagoscopic and bronchoscopic evaluations and associated therapies. Otherwise we introduce the newest minimal invasive surgeries such as sialoendoscope and the da Vinci surgical system for precise tumor excision and organ preservation. We also focus on the basic reserches of molecular biology, biological materials, and oncogene studies, and more exquisite phonosurgery for the best medical service.
