Uroflowmetry (UFR)

1. Purpose

Uroflowmetry is a simple, diagnostic screening procedure used to calculate the flow rate of urine over time. The test is noninvasive. It tracks how fast urine flows, how much flows out, and how long it takes. It’s a diagnostic test to assess how well the urinary tract functions, detects functional or structural impairment.

2. Preparation

A. No informed consent or fasting is needed before the test.

B. If you had other test that will affects voiding condition (i.e. Using enema for intravenous pyelography, Cystoscopy), please make appointment to another day.

C. Gradually drink 500-800ml of water, do not receive test until you have strong desire of voiding.

3. During the procedure

A. You will begin to urinate into the funnel device that is attached to the recorder. The flowmeter will record information as you are urinating. You should not push or strain as you urinate. You should remain as still as possible.

B. A valid exam is defined as voided volume greater than 150ml. If your test result showed insufficient volume, you may need to re-do the test.

4. After the procedure

Generally, there is no special type of care following uroflowmetry.
