1.What is cystoscopy?
Cystoscopy is an intervention procedure to examine patient's urethra and urinary bladder. Using a local anesthetic jelly to numb your urethra. Or it may be done as an outpatient procedure, with sedation. The cystoscope can further divide into rigid and flexible cystoscpe. Rigid cystoscpe is made by solid metal, whereas flexible cystoscope consist of optic fiber with soft platic surface.
2. Indication of cystoscopy
Cystoscopy is used to diagnose, monitor and treat conditions mostly affecting the bladder and urethra.
Urologist may arrange cystoscopy to:
A. Investigate symptoms and signs
Blood in urine, Incontinence, Overactive bladder, Painful urination.
B. Diagnose bladder and urethra condition
Urethra stricture, Enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), Bladder tumor, Bladder stone.
C. Follow up of disease or treatment
Insert/Remove Double-J catheter, Follow up previous bladder cancer, Evacuate blood clot, Remove tiny bladder stone.
