Teaching hospitals bear the threefold mission of research, service, and education, with high-quality clinical teaching being the key to cultivating future healthcare professionals. Establishing a dedicated teaching department to oversee and manage these efforts is essential. Therefore, the Teaching Department has been established to enhance the quality of clinical education not only within our hospital but also nationwide.

The department contains:

3 divisions: Division of Faculty Development, Division of Clinical Skills Training, Division of Evidence-based Medicine

2 sections: Section of Teaching Affairs, Section of Medical Library

In addition, we assist VGHTPE in the operation and management of the Clinical Innovation Center (CiC).

To enhance medical education and cultivate faculty, our hospital established a task force under the Department of Medical Education and Research. In February 2003, the Clinical Skills Training Center was founded, responsible for clinical skills instruction and training, including OSCE and ACLS.The first director was Professor Cheng-Tien Kuo , followed by Associate Professor Tsu-Yu Chen as the second director and Professor Chao-Wen Chen as the third director. In 2014, Professor Ying-Ying Yang became the fourth director, and in 2021, Professor Chung-Pin Li took over as the fifth director.

In 2004, the Medical Illustration and Education Section merged with the Teaching Section to form the Medical Education and Illustration Section. Additionally, the Medical Research Division was established to oversee all research projects within the hospital, assist in the administrative affairs of the Department of Medical Education and Research, and serve as one of the three major administrative support and management units alongside the Medical Library Section and the Medical Research Division.Since 2013, the first section chief was Yu-Hsiang Hu, and in 2019, Ching-Ju Hsiao succeeded as the second section chief.

In July 2009, the Faculty Development Center was established to train clinical educators. In the same year, the Medical Education Center was founded, comprising the Clinical Education Division, Clinical Skills Training Division, and Teaching Administration Section. The center was responsible for training UGY (undergraduate medical students), PGY (postgraduate year trainees), residents, and allied healthcare personnel across the hospital. Since 2014, the first director was Professor Chen-Huan Chen, followed by the second director, Associate Professor Ming-De Chen. In 2022, Professor Hao-Min Cheng took over as the third director.

Following the Executive Yuan's organizational restructuring in 2013, the Department of Medical Education and Research was again divided into two independent first-tier units: the Department of Medical Research and the Department of Medical Education. The Department of Medical Education then comprised the Section of Medical Library, Section of Teaching Affairs,  Division of Clinical Skills Training, and  Division of Faculty Development. The first director was Professor Ling-Yu Yang. Since 2021, the position has been held by the second director, Professor Ying-Ying Yang.

The Section of Teaching Affairs oversees the training of nearly 2,000 healthcare professionals annually, including young physicians, medical interns, PGY trainees across various disciplines, and nursing interns. Additionally, the section manages the training of international medical professionals and students, with the total number of overseas trainees reaching up to 250 per year, primarily from the United States, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines.

In 2017, responding to the needs of medical services, the Department of Medical Education established the Center for Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) as a task force,  with Professor Hao-Min Cheng serving as the center director. In 2022, to further meet institutional needs, the hospital formally established the "Division of Evidence-Based Medicine" under the Department of Medic

al Education as a secondary unit, replacing the previous task force structure. In 2023, Associate Professor Jen-Feng Liang was appointed as the first director of the division.

The Department of Medical Education has been overseen by several Vice Superintendents, including Vice Superintendent Shung-Tai Ho, Vice Superintendent Fa-Yauh Lee, Vice Superintendent Hsin-Chang Huang, Vice Superintendent Shou-Yen Kao, and Vice Superintendent Yung-Yang Lin. Currently, it remains under the supervision of Vice Superintendent Shuu-Jiun Wang.

The department currently includes one consultant, Professor Chen-Huan Chen, and several teaching physicians: Assistant Professor Chia-Chang Huang, Assistant Professor Yi-Hsuan Lin, Lecturer Hsiao-Chin Shen, Lecturer Hsiao-Yun Yeh, and Lecturer Su-Jen Chen.
