Introduction |
This 2- to 4-week rotation for senior medical students includes the following context: |
Objective |
1. describe the underlying pathophysiology of common infectious, cardiovascular, neurologic, traumatic, and toxicologic emergencies and use this information in the development of a therapeutic plan for an acutely ill patient (MK) 2. obtain an accurate problem-focused history and physical examination from a patient presenting to the emergency department (ED) with an undifferentiated complaint. (PC) 3. formulate a differential diagnosis for their patient's chief concern, prioritizing the likelihood of the diagnosis and considering worst-case diagnoses. (PC) |

Tentative Schedule |
1. Clinical shifts in ED, including triage area, resuscitation area, trauma area, triage 3 to 5 area, observation unit, and EICU. (2 to 4 weeks) 2. Medical students observe the process of evaluating and treating patients in close conjunction with Emergency Medicine (EM) Residents and EM Attending Physicians. 3. Invitation to weekly EM and trauma pitfall conferences. 4. Invitation to didactic teaching rounds (5 per week) with senior EM Residents and EM Attending Physicians. |
