Introduction |
The core practices of General Surgery include surgery for breast tumor, thyroid tumor, gastric tumor, morbid obesity, small intestine tumor, liver tumor, pancreatic tumor, spleen tumor or autoimmune thrombocytopenia, gallstone or gallbladder tumor, inguinal or ventral hernia, and emergent surgery (ex. hollow organ perforation, intestinal obstruction, acute appendicitis, ischemic bowel disease, incarcerated hernia, etc. ) With the advancement of instruments and techniques for minimally invasive surgery, more than 50% of operations in our Division can be performed by laparoscopic surgery, including gastrectomy, bariatric surgery, hernioplasty, cholecystectomy, splenectomy and hepatectomy. With the aid of Davinci system, we also perform robotic Whipple operation, distal pancreatectomy, gastrectomy, and hepatectomy. There are 17 qualified and well experienced general surgeons in the Division including three professors, three associate professor and four associate professors. |
Learning Objectives |
1. Know the surgical indications for diseases including breast, thyroid, stomach, pancreas, hepatobiliary system, pancreas and hernia. 2. Familiarize with patient evaluation: history taking and physical examination, interpretation of laboratory results, formulating of differential diagnosis. 3. Perform teamwork and closely collaborate with other colleagues. |

Tentative Schedule |
The student functions as an integral part of the team: 1.They make pre-rounds on the assigned patients, attend morning and afternoon rounds with the Pediatric Surgery Team. 2.They attend and observe all pediatric surgical procedures (routine operation days are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays), including pediatric and adult liver transplantations. 3.They attend to our Pediatric Surgery Clinics on Tuesdays and Thursdays. 4.They observe patient evaluations in the Emergency Department. 5.They attend to all academic functions in the Division of Pediatric Surgery, and Grand Rounds/Mortality and Morbidity Conference in the Department of Surgery. |
