Chest Medicine
Clinical Elective Program for Foreign Medical Students
November 2015
The core practices of Department of Chest Medicine include general chest medicine, clinical respiratory physiology, respiratory infections and immunology, thoracic oncology, critical care medicine, and respiratory therapy. The following training program designed as one-month elective, equivalent to clerkship and internship training for local students, aims to help the foreign medical students understand the basic principles of chest medicine practices and the indications of special examinations for the pulmonary diseases, by providing them the opportunities for direct observation of the procedures.
A. Registration and Duty
a) Usual work day is from 7:30 am to 17:30 pm.
b) Clerk and Intern should attend The Joint Pulmonary Image Seminar at National Taiwan University Hospital every Friday afternoon held by Taiwan Society of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
B. Basic knowledge acquirement
a). understand the normal anatomy of the chest.
b). understand the principles, conventional diagnosis and treatment of various chest diseases.
c). learn the basic ability of chest X-rays reading.
d). understand the interpretation of the blood gas analysis and pulmonary function test.
e). learn to perform proper technique of chest physical examination, especially lung auscultation.
f). understand the principles, differential diagnosis and treatment of various acute and chronic respiratory failure.
g). understand the principles, and management of patients with mechanical ventilation support in ICU.
C. Clinical course content
a). attend patient care under the guidance of residents and attending physician
b). attend teaching-oriented outpatient clinic services.
c). attend the weekly teaching rounds at the wards
d). case presentation of new patient, focused on chest X-ray interpretation
e). attend the weekly conference, including multidiscipline case conference, lung cancer meeting, critical care conference, and ICU case discussion…
D. Hospice care
a). learn from interdisciplinary training team to integrate hospice medicine
b). learn team-work communication skills, clinical patient care, as well as medical knowledge about hospice care
c). learn the nutrition and fluid management of terminal patients.
d). recognize the pre-dying symptoms, and the related palliative treatment
Medical student is asked to choose a case for discussion with his/her attending physician as supervisor, resident and nurse regarding physical assessment, infection control and other basic skills required for the case reported.
