Introduction

The Division of Transfusion Medicine of the Department of Internal Medicine of Taipei Veterans General Hospital is located on the 2nd floor of Zhongzheng Building. Our division is devided into 3 working unit according to the tasks: pre-transfusion laboratory, apheresis unit and reference laboratory. Transfusion medicine is an independent medical specialty that focuses not only on the collection, preservation, and transfusion techniques of blood, but also on the application of blood separation technologies. These include the extraction, isolation, and freezing of peripheral blood cell products such as hematopoietic stem cells, lymphocytes, granulocytes, and platelets, along with their clinical applications. The specialty also encompasses genetic counseling services, including platelet antibody screening, HLA typing, parentage testing, and STR tracking before and after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Today, transfusion medicine plays a crucial role in modern healthcare systems, continuously enhancing transfusion safety and efficiency through advances in technology.

The undergraduate program consists of 3 attending physicians, 14 medical examiners, 2 blood separation nurses 1 worker, and 1 administrative assistant. The attending physicians are qualified with the certificates of internal medicine specialists, hematology specialists, and medical oncology specialists. They are responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, the investigation and advice of blood transfusion reactions, the consultation of apheresis, and the teaching, consultation and research related to transfusion medicine.

The Division of Transfusion Medicine has continuously passed the medical laboratory certification of the College of American Pathology (CAP) since 2003, and has also obtained the permission of the Human Organ Preservation Bank of the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The parent-child blood identification project has also won the SNQ (Symbol of National Quality) national quality mark. Provide diversified and high-quality transfusion medicine services
