The most common reason for thyroid surgery is suspected malignant tumor. However, even if the thyroid tumor is benign, surgery may be necessary to treat symptoms such as breathing difficulties and swallowing difficulties caused by compression of the trachea or esophagus, as well as hyperthyroidism.
Surgery is recommended when the following results are obtained from thyroid ultrasound and fine needle aspiration biopsy:
-
Diagnosed as thyroid papillary carcinoma.
-
There is a possibility of malignant tumor.
-
Atypical cells or tumors that cannot be diagnosed from fine needle aspiration biopsy (such as follicular tumors).
Clinical physicians will make surgical decisions based on the patient's test results and tumor presentation.
