Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
 

In early 1970s, Department of Psychiatry, Taipei Veterans General Hospital is the first clinical institute focusing on child and adolescent mental health, and offered the outpatient service specific for children and adolescents suffering mental problems. During these years, child and adolescent psychiatrists devoted to offering the optimal clinical services and to helping numerous children and adolescents overcome their difficulties and diseases.

 

In 1989, Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry was established as a sub-specialized unit under Department of Psychiatry, Taipei Veterans General Hospital. Dr Ying-Sheue Chen was the first Chief and leaded Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for over 20 years. Dr Ju-Wei Hsu was the second Chief and leaded Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry between 2014 and 2021. Now, Dr Mu-Hong Chen is the Chief since 2021.

 

The clinical work and service, including outpatients and inpatients services, consultation liaison, and mental rehabilitation, in Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry focused on children and adolescents and young adults aged 21 years and less. Education and training programs were arranged for child and adolescent specialists, psychiatric residents, and rotating interns and clerks. In addition, Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry also carried out the clinical studies investigating child and adolescents mental illnesses and treatment.

 

In 2000, cooperating with Department of Education, Taipei City Government, Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry established a daycare ward namely “Sun-Flower school” specific for mental rehabilitation and special education of children and adolescents suffering psychiatric illnesses. Many specialists, including child and adolescent psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, occupation therapists, social workers, and teachers, worked together to improve the treatment and care quality and to offer the individualized rehabilitation and education programs.

 

In 2000, Division of psychiatry, Gan-Dau Hospital, managed by Taipei Veterans General Hospital, sat up the Early Intervention Program for children with developmental delay. Cooperating with Division of psychiatry, Gan-Dau Hospital, and Department of Rehabilitation, Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Taipei Veterans General Hospital, offered the more comprehensive clinical service in early intervention.

 

Now, the team members in Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry include 1 Chief, 2 attending psychiatrists, 2~3 research fellows and 1~2 resident as well as nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, and special education teachers.

 

The clinical services Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry include (a) child and adolescent mental health outpatients service, (b) early intervention outpatients service, (c) child and adolescent mental health inpatients service, (d) child and adolescent daycare ward service (Sun-Follow School), (e) outpatients group therapy, and (f) school and community consulting service.

 

Our goal in Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry include (a) the achievement of high quality clinical services, (b) the offering of comprehensive and integrated education and training programs, and (c) the innovation for child and adolescent researches. Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry hope bring the best clinical care and treatment for child and adolescent patients, the most absorbing education and training programs for students, and the most innovative ideas and findings for researchers.
