Founded in 1970, the Nuclear Medicine Center was reorganized into the Nuclear Medicine Department in 1974. The department consists of the Nuclear Medicine Division, Radiopharmaceutical Laboratory and Clinical Immunoassay Laboratory. The Department pioneered the use of conventional scintigraphy (1970), radioimmunoassay (1973) and nuclear medicine computers (1977) in Taiwan. The Department also introduced single photon computed tomography (SPECT) into Taiwan in 1984.
