Introduction

The emergency room of our hospital was officially upgraded to the emergency department in 1989, which is a first-level unit. Introduce emergency medical systems from advanced countries in Europe and the United States, establish a grading system for trauma examination and various emergency quality indicators, in order to improve the hospital's first aid efficiency and medical quality in the treatment of acutely injured patients

Emergency Department operations include Emergency Medicine, Trauma Medicine and Disaster Medicine. In 1995, the first "emergency intensive care center" was established in Taiwan. With a complete medical team and flexible operation, excellent equipment and excellent quality control indicators, it comprehensively implements the high-quality medical diagnosis and treatment model of first aid, intensive care, and division of departments. In 1997, the Department of Emergency Medicine was officially recognized as the main specialty by the Department of Health. Through the regular review of the Emergency Quality Management Committee and the Multiple Trauma Committee, we will continue to refine and improve the quality of emergency medical care in our hospital.

In terms of medical response to major disasters, the 921 earthquake in 1999, the hospital took the lead in participating in rescue, post-disaster medical care and reconstruction work. In 2003, when SARS hit the world, we treated the largest number of confirmed and suspected patients of SARS in Taiwan, and continued to provide comprehensive medical services when major hospitals closed emergency rooms. In 2015, during the dust explosion incidence we launched a mass casualty response measures for the injured. In the shortest possible time, more than 200 medical personnel were mobilized, a total of 43 injured patients were treated, and a total of 17 people were admitted to the intensive care unit. It shows the emergency department of Taipei Veterans General Hospital’s ability to handle unexpected mass casualties. In 2020, the COVID-19 epidemic spread in the community. The emergency department shouldered the tasks of screening, isolation, diagnosis, admission and treatment, at the same time supported large-scale fever-screening station outside the emergency room, in order to prevent intra-hospital outbreak.

At present, the hospital treats 85,000 emergency patients every year, with an average of about 230 patients per day. It is the leading acute medical care center in the country and has repeatedly won the highest honor in the national hospital evaluation. Among them, it treated patients with acute and severe diseases, such as acute stroke, acute myocardial infarction, major trauma, acute aortic dissection, etc., and accepts referrals from other medical centers. All hospital quality indicators are among the top in the country.。

The department took the lead in the country in 1986, and established emergency medicine courses in the National Yang Ming University School of Medicine. In 2003, the Institute of Acute and Critical Care Medicine was established in National Yang Ming University School of Medicine. About 40 related papers are published every year, more than 80% of which are SCI papers. The attending physicians and residents have outstanding performances in international journals, and implement a number of research projects of the National Science Council and the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The department has trained many excellent emergency physicians over the years. Not only the academic achievements are outstanding, but the physicians who have completed the training also work in major medical centers, regional hospitals as supervisors and superintendents demonstrating the excellency in the education program of the department.

The hardware of the emergency department was substantially rebuilt in 2013. In the future, it will continue to expand and upgrade hardware, supplemented by high-quality equipments, and info-technology and communication technology, so that medical care are better patient-centered. Based on the core concept of "safe, fast, efficient, and high-quality treatment", the department aims to constantly upgrade and improve emergency medical care.
