Information of the past fellows

  • Dr. Jonathan P. Rivera, Philippine General Hospital (Head and neck/thyroid pathology and cytopathology fellow, June 2023 – May 2024)

During his fellowship training, Dr. Rivera reviewed routine and referral histopathology and cytopathology cases of the head and neck/thyroid, under the guidance of the program directors, Dr. Jen-Fan Hang and Dr. Ying-Ju Kuo. This led to a fruitful discussion on morphology, pertinent differential diagnosis, and relevant ancillary tests that needed to be performed on the cases. He also helped on drafting the consultation reports in selected referral cases to aptly apply what he had learned. To further his expertise in the field, he was given access to whole slide images of rare and difficult cases of the head and neck/thyroid. In addition, Dr. Rivera actively participated in daily online conferences led by attending pathologists in various subspecialties, observed the grossing of surgical pathology specimens, and was allowed to participate in the multidisciplinary conferences held in the hospital. Furthermore, he collaborated on two projects, one invited review and one research, intended for international publication and served as the primary author for both. As a highlight of his fellowship training, he presented his research on the Endocrine Pathology platform at the annual meeting of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) held in March 23-28, 2024 in Baltimore, Maryland. This study has been subsequently accepted by the prestigious scientific journal, American Journal of Surgical Pathology.
