Physical Therapy

The Rehabilitation Department of Taipei Veterans General Hospital was established in July of 1959 and began operations for physical therapy. There are 36 therapists with different titles, including Chief Technician, Technician, Assistant Technician, Technicians and Technical Assistant.

Clinical Treatment

  1. Orthopedic physical therapy includes degenerative joint arthritis, cervical syndrome, lower back pain, frozen shoulder, tendinitis, post-joint replacement patients, and amputation patients.

  2. Neurological physical therapy includes stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, and peripheral nerve injury.

  3. Pediatric physical therapy includes cerebral palsy and patients with Down syndrome.

  4. Cardiopulmonary physical therapy includes patients with angina, myocardial infarction, coronary artery bypass surgery, heart transplantation, etc.

Treatment Equipment

  • Low-frequency electrical therapy, intermediate frequency electrical stimulation, shortwave, ultrasonic, laser, paraffin therapy, heat therapy, infrared therapy, cryotherapy, traction therapy, and constant speed movement therapy equipment are available.
  • Treatment therapists use various equipment to evaluate patients and develop treatment plans and methods to provide the most appropriate treatment.

Clinical Teaching

  • In-house: In charge of clinical training for interns from the Medical Department of National Yang-Ming University, first-year residents of the department, and department-wide teaching curriculum.
  • External: Responsible for teaching in-service physical therapists from other branches of the hospital and other hospitals, as well as students from universities (such as National Yang-Ming, National Cheng Kung, National China, Kaohsiung Medical University), and physical therapy students from vocational schools (such as Shu-Jen Medical School).

Clinical Research 

Physical therapy research is aimed at finding better solutions to clinical treatment problems and exploring innovative ideas in depth. Over the years, funding has been received from institutions such as the Health and Welfare Bureau and the National Science Council to conduct research on physical therapy for issues such as balance problems in the elderly and stroke rehabilitation.
