The Division of Peripheral Nervous System Disorders of Taipei Veterans General Hospital was established in 1989. Our division is dedicated to provide the state-of-the-art clinical services and conduct cutting edge academic research in neurology.
Our experts specialize in the entire scope of neuromuscular disorders, including polyneuropathy, inflammatory neuropathy, radiculopathy, motor neuron diseases, myasthenic syndrome, inflammatory myopathy, multiple sclerosis, and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders. Notably, our team includes several renowned neurogenetics experts in Taiwan. They specialize in diagnosing and treating adult hereditary neurological diseases, such as hereditary motor-sensory polyneuropathy (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, CMT), familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP), spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA), Huntington’s disease (HD), myotonic dystrophy, muscular dystrophy, hereditary spastic paraparesis (HSP), Kennedy’s disease (spinal bulbar muscular atrophy), cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL), and neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID).
Our team has participated in numerous international clinical trials and has provided cutting-edge therapies for neurological disorders. Diseases addressed in our completed and ongoing trials include familial amyloid polyneuropathy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica spectrum diseases, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy and myasthenia gravis.
Our group comprises experienced clinical and laboratory technicians capable of conducting comprehensive evaluations for neuromuscular diseases. Our services include electrophysiological studies, muscle and nerve biopsies for neuromuscular pathology, skin biopsy and genetic diagnostics.
Common symptoms associated with these diseases include:
- Sensory symptoms, such as numbness, paresthesia, tingling sensation
- Neuropathic pain, including sciatica, trigeminal neuralgia
- Muscle soreness
- Muscle weakness
- Muscular atrophy
- Fasciculation
- Gait disturbance
- Ataxia
- Dysarthria and/or dysphagia
- Facial palsy
Our team consists of five attending physicians who specialize in the clinical care and research of neuromuscular disorders, neuroimmunology, and neurogenetics:
Dr. Yi-Chu Liao, Division Chief
Dr. Yi-Chung Lee
Dr. Kuan-Lin Lai
Dr. Cheng-Tsung Hsiao
Dr. Kang-Yang Jih
Our electrophysiology and neurogenetic laboratories offer the following services:
- Nerve conduction studies
- Electromyogram
- Evoked potential studies
- Transcranial magnetic stimulation tests
- Autonomic function tests
- Nerve, muscle, and skin biopsies
- Genetic diagnostics
