Dr. Wei-Ming Chen, Superintendent of Taipei Veterans General Hospital
Over the past year, healthcare systems around the world have faced unprecedented challenges in the post-pandemic era, including the intensifying climate change, an increasing super-aged population, and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI). For Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TVGH), this has been not merely a year of change but also a critical moment to re-examine our role and responsibilities as a medical center. Sustainable development is the fundamental mission for TVGH. We are fully committed to embracing ESG into every aspect of our development, not only in support of national policies but also in fulfillment of our responsibility as a global citizen.
Pursuing Excellence: A Benchmark for International Standards in Healthcare
Thanks to the collective efforts of all staff, TNGH was ranked No. 174 in the Newsweek World’s Best Hospitals 2026. This recognition demonstrates the steady progress our institution has made and reminds us to continuously reflect on our performance and strive for improvement. Rankings are not our ultimate goal, but rather an external assessment of the quality of our healthcare quality and our institutional governance. We will continue to pursue excellence as we advance toward becoming a world-class medical center in a humble and pragmatic manner.
Resilient Governance: The Transformation from Decision-Making to Action
Since 2025, ESG has been incorporated into the core of the Hospital’s decision-making process, integrating strategic priorities such as energy conservation and carbon reduction, smart healthcare, and talent development into TVGH’s management indicators and promoting and implementing them through institutional mechanisms. In the face of risks posed by extreme climate events and global energy transition, we continue to strengthen our infrastructure and operational resilience to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services. While advancing our net-zero transition, we remain steadfast in protecting healthcare quality and patient safety. Whether through medical waste recycling, carbon emission management, energy efficiency improvements, or the implementation of ethical governance and medical ethics, it all comes down to maintaining public trust in the healthcare system.
Technology with a Human Touch: Human-Centered Digital Transformation
As a national medical center, TVGH continues to strengthen its medical care for patients with acute, critical, complex, and rare diseases. Following the launch of the Heavy Ion Therapy Center, TVGH is actively advancing the development of the Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) Center to provide cancer patients with more diverse and advanced treatment options.
Throughout the development of AI and digital healthcare, we adhere to three fundamental principles: prioritizing patient safety and ethics, placing physicians’ professional judgement at the core, and protecting information security without compromise. Technology should serve as a supporting tool to help reduce administrative burdens, allowing healthcare professionals to focus on clinical care. The essence of medicine has always been rooted in sincere compassion and the commitment to “treating patients as if they were family members”.
A Happy Workplace: Sustainable Talent Development and Global Responsibility
High-quality healthcare services rely on a stable and professional team. Only in a safe, respectful, and supportive environment can healthcare professional remain committed to their work and sustain their professional dedication over the long term. Therefore, we continue to improve our staff’s working and living environments while establishing comprehensive career development systems. At the same time, we actively engage in international collaboration and overseas medical assistance to strengthen partnerships with global medical institutions and fulfill our responsibility as a medical center.
Our Vision for the Future
“Treating patients as if they were family members and pursuing excellence” is the core value TVGH has been upholding. Moving forward, we will continue to advance sustainable development through institutionalized, data-driven, and transparent approaches, ensuring that healthcare quality, talent development, and environmental responsibilities move forward together. The purpose of TVGH is not limited to treating illness; it is to build a healthcare model that earns the trust of the public, a source of pride for our staff, and a healthcare model that coexists harmoniously and thrives together with society and the environment.
