New-Generation Oncology Treatment Equipment
Cancer remains the leading cause of death among the top ten causes of mortality in Taiwan, and the incidence rate has continued to rise year by year. To provide cancer patients, who account for nearly one-third of all hospitalized patients, with more advanced cancer treatment options, the Hospital continues to introduce the world’s most advanced cancer treatment technologies to create comprehensive and excellent diagnostic and therapeutic services. TVGH’s state-of-the-art radiotherapy equipment, built at a cost of NT$300 million, officially commenced operation in 2025. The new generation High-Dose-Rate (HDR) Image-Guided Medical Linear Accelerator is equipped with a thermal image-guided tracking and correction system, making it the world's only top-of-the-line flagship device capable of real-time monitoring of tumor and surface changes during treatment and achieving automatic and precise positioning correction. This technology not only significantly enhances the precision and effectiveness of radiotherapy, but also safeguards patients’ privacy and dignity, reflecting the hospital’s enduring commitment to compassionate and sustainable healthcare.

Since the establishment of Taiwan’s first Hybrid Angio-CT system in 2011, the Hospital has accumulated 14 years of outstanding clinical achievements. This integrated system deeply integrates a navigation system and a real-time monitor, enabling seamless real-time switching between angiography X-ray machines and computed tomography (CT) scanners. This technology not only enables precise tumor localization and highly targeted drug delivery or treatment to the lesion, but also allows the entire procedure to be completed efficiently within a single operating room, eliminating the potential risks of transferring patients across examination rooms and significantly enhancing the precision and safety of oncology treatment.
Taipei Veterans General Hospital reintroduced the next-generation Hybrid Angio-CT in 2025. This advanced system complements conventional surgery and radiation therapy, providing the multidisciplinary care team with enhanced capabilities for the ablation procedures of a wide range of tumors, including liver, kidney, lung, and bone cancers. The Hospital continues to provide cancer patients with more forward-looking and personalized clinical treatment options, and fulfill our commitment to sustainable value-based and sustainable healthcare.

Expanded Application of Minimally Invasive Surgery
As a pioneer in robotic surgery in Taiwan, TVGH introduced Asia’s first Si model (third-generation) da Vinci robotic surgical system in 2009, and successively introduced three more fourth-generation Xi model systems in 2017, 2021, and 2024. Recent advances in medical imaging and precision navigation technologies have significantly expanded the scope of minimally invasive surgery, enabling its clinical application to the treatment of a wide range of highly complex and technically challenging diseases.
TVGH’s pancreatic surgery team overcame multiple challenges to develop the highly complex and challenging minimally invasive surgery of robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy using the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, which not only won the Symbol of National Quality (SNQ) in the 27th National Biotechnology and Medical Care Quality Award. With over 700 cases completed to date, this procedure has reached world-class standards. The tumor eradication rate (radicality) of this surgery is comparable to traditional open surgery, significantly reduces the size of the incision, alleviates postoperative pain, greatly shortens hospital stays, and accelerates the recovery of daily activities.

Conventional cardiac surgery typically requires a median sternotomy with an incision of approximately 20 cm, resulting in substantial trauma to the sternum and surrounding tissues. Through close multidisciplinary collaboration among specialists in cardiology, cardiac surgery, and anesthesiology, the Hospital has pioneered next-generation Endoscopic Minimally Invasive Valvular Surgery. This innovative procedure has been widely applied to the treatment of mitral valve disease, tricuspid valve disease, atrial septal defects, and cardiac tumors, among other complex cardiac conditions.
In recent years, the Hospital has successfully completed multiple rare cases of endoscopic minimally invasive aortic valve replacement surgeries in Taiwan, including the highly demanding simultaneous double-valve replacement involving both the aortic and mitral valves, demonstrating our advanced expertise in complex minimally invasive cardiac surgery. The results and demonstration video of this surgery have been officially published on CTSNet, a premier global online resource and community platform for cardiothoracic surgery jointly overseen by American Association for Thoracic Surgery and European Association for Cardio-Thoracic surgery. These accomplishments underscore the Hospital’s internationally recognized excellence in advanced minimally invasive cardiac surgery.

To provide more comprehensively integrated care, the Hospital officially expanded and upgraded the original “Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Center” to “Weight Management Medical Center” in 2025, marking a new milestone in the field of bariatric and metabolic medicine. The center features a dedicated outpatient facility and seamlessly integrates multidisciplinary expertise from bariatric surgery, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, family medicine, and Department of Dietetics and Nutrition to establish a comprehensive multidisciplinary care model. This model provides a full continuum of care, encompassing meticulous preoperative assessment, individualized nutritional counseling, advanced surgical treatment, and comprehensive postoperative follow-up and long-term management. In addition, the center is also actively developing the da Vinci Robotic-Assisted Bariatric Surgery, which excellently integrates both medical and surgical expertise. It is hoped that cutting-edge minimally invasive technology is used to provide patients with more diverse and precise personalized medical options, thereby substantially improving weight loss results and patient satisfaction.
Dual-Team Collaboration to Successfully Complete a Rare Surgical Procedure
In April 2025, TVGH cardiac surgery and liver transplant teams collaborated across disciplines to successfully perform a globally rare and extremely complex “ex vivo liver resection and autotransplantation with cardiopulmonary bypass” surgery. Through seamless multidisciplinary collaboration, the medical team successfully removed a massive malignant leiomyosarcoma extending from the patient’s hepatic veins and inferior vena cava into the right atrium, reversing an otherwise life-threatening condition and offering the patient a renewed chance of survival. This landmark surgical achievement demonstrates the hospital's medical strength in treating acute, severe, rare, and difficult diseases.

During a routine health examination in 2024, Ms. Pan discovered a malignant tumor in her body. The malignant tumor had silently grown around her hepatic veins and inferior vena cava, extending into the right atrium. Despite temporary disease control achieved through chemotherapy and radiation therapy, surgery remained her only hope for cure. However, the tumor's insidious location led many medical centers to conclude that complete removal was virtually impossible and carried unacceptable surgical risk.
In late March 2025, Ms. Pan sought treatment at the General Surgery Department of the Hospital. After numerous simulations by the cardiac surgery and liver transplant teams and thorough communication with the family regarding the extreme risks, the surgery was finally performed on April 9, 2025. The entire surgery lasted 14 hours, from 10 a.m. to midnight. It was a thrilling and challenging operation that involved removing the liver, resecting the tumor, reconstructing the hepatic vein, removing the heart tumor, reconstructing the inferior vena cava, and replanting the liver back into the body. The patient has been recovering well since the surgery.
National Quality Certification
Known as Taiwan’s “Medical Oscar”, the National Biotechnology and Healthcare Quality Award (Symbol of National Quality, SNQ) has honored outstanding achievements in healthcare since 1998. Winners are selected through a highly competitive evaluation process conducted by more than 130 renowned experts from medicine, academia, and industry. Only healthcare teams and innovations that meet world-class standards and demonstrate global competitiveness are selected to receive Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards.
At the end of 2025, the results of the 28th National Biotechnology and Medicine Care Quality Award were announced. TVGH received 18 SNQ Certification Badges, including 1 Silver Award, and 2 Bronze Awards. Fruitful results were also obtained in the six major areas, including “Specialty Medical Services”, “Smart Healthcare”, “Medical Professional Services”, “Medical Administration”, “Community Services”, and “Sustainable Development”, highlighting TVGH’s excellent performance in comprehensive healthcare services and governance quality.
