History

introduction

The development of Taipei Veteran General Hospital neurosurgery department was as follows.

At 1975, Chang Kwang-Hsiung, MD and Huang Jun I, MD were promoted as attending physician of department of Neurosurgery and setup of neurosurgery residency training program

At 1975, Dr. Tai-Tong Wong entered the training program and became the first resident, followed by Dr. Pan Hong-ji. The training period last for 5 years, including 6 months Neuro-anatomy training at National Yang Ming University

Since 1975, introducing operating microscope brought great advancement in every neurosurgical field. The first development was cerebral vascular diseases. The department director, Dr Shen was responsible for the treatment of occlusive vascular disease. The vascular team was invited to join the international cooperative study for EC / IC bypass. The 2nd field benefit from microsuregry was brain tumor surgery, mainly directed by Dr Lee Liang Hsung. Focusing on deep brain and skull base surgery, such as total removal of large petroclival meningioma; the application of approaches for pineal region tumor; the development of transsphenoidal approach for pituitary adenoma. The quantity and quality of surgery got great improvement since then. .

Foundation of Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit

At 1975, Taipei Veterans General Hospital Set up the first neurological intensive care unit in Taiwan which had 5 beds. After improvement and expansion for decades, there are currently 31 beds.

At 1978, The Chingling foundation was established in the amount of NT $ 30,000,000.

In 1980, Dr. Lee Liang Huang became chief of department of neurosurgery

In 1980 and 1981, there were 4 neurosurgical physician, Dr. Pan Hong-Ji, Dr. Huang Jun-I, Dr. Tai Tong Wong, Dr. Chang Kuang-Xiong came abroad for studies and brought great advancement in every aspect of Neurosurgery development, and It became a tradition to send our senior attending abroad for advance research.

At 1984, director Shen die on leukemia. Huang Jun-I, MD, has been responsible for a surgical treatment of occlusive vascular disease.

At 1984 and 1985, neurology and neurosurgery physician Yao jun Xing and Yang-Xing Shi came to Canada McGill Neurological Institute for training, prepare for the future development of epilepsy surgery. Both of them associated with epilepsy surgery group and established 24-hour record of epilepsy monitoring unit and had great contribution to epilepsy surgery development.

In 1989, The Neurologic institute was formed which include eight divisions - general neurosurgery, pediatric neurosurgery, functional neurosurgery, intensive care wards, general neurology, vascular Branch, Division of epilepsy and peripheral neurology.

In 1992, Xieren Jun came to Karolinska Institute for study neurophysiology. He is currently responsible for clinical research of Three-Tesla functional MRI and MEG, for brain mapping and seizure surgery which was very helpful .

In 1993, Dr. Henrich Cheng came to Karolinska Institute and followed Prof. Olson to research the topic of nerve repair. The results were outstanding and published in Science journal. In 1998, neural regerneration lab was set up and focused on the topic of spinal cord regeneration, brachial plexus injury and peripheral nerve regeneration.

In 1994, Setup of Gamma-knife room in VGHTPE. Dr. Pan Hong-Ji, Guo Wan-You and Zhong Wen-Yu organized a gammaknife team and started GKRS treatment

Taipei Veterans General Hospital's neurosurgery currently have a director and five division directors: Professor Yang-Xing Shi: director of Institute of Neurology and department of neurosurgery; Min-Xiong Chen: division director of General neurosurgery; Zhong Wen Yu: division director of Functional neurosurgery; Henrich Cheng: division director of Nerve regeneration; Huang Ming Chao: division director of Pediatric neurosurgery; Chen Ming de: division director of Neurological intensive care; Attending physicians: 17; residency 10; nurse practitioner 12; a senior technician; technician 16; total 169 beds, including the NCU has 31; accounted for about 90% of the bed rate, average length of stay the number of days to about 15 days. There were four dedicated operating room, about 60 surgeries per week.

In 2023/1, professor/deputy director of neuro institute Henrich Cheng retired. Professor Wen-Cheng, Huang became deputy director of neuro institute. Currently, there are 23 attending physicians in the department of Neurosurgery, where as 6 operating rooms per day.
