Introduction

Division of Allergy, Immunology & Rheumatology of Taipei Veterans General Hospital was established in 1983 and owned largest rheumatologic ward in Taiwan. We care for patients with the entire spectrum of rheumatic diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), systemic sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Sjögren's syndrome, seronegative spondyloarthritis (such as ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, and reactive arthritis), crystal deposition arthritis (such as gout), vasculitis, and IgG4-related diseases, etc. We also take care of many allergic diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, asthma, and urticaria.

We are interested in bench and bedside researches regarding the clinical and basic aspects of rheumatic, allergic and immunologic disorders. We have published many outstanding manuscripts in high-impact journals, such as ANNALS OF THE RHEUMATIC DISEASES (2021 impact factor 27.9), BMC medicine (2021 impact factor 11.8), Arthritis & Rheumatology (2021 impact factor 15.5), RHEUMATOLOGY (2021 impact factor 7.0), ARTHRITIS RESEARCH & THERAPY (2021 impact factor 5.6), etc.

In 2018, our department was awarded The Symbol of National Quality in the Featured Specialty Section, Hospital Category as excellent care for the critical pulmonary diseases in SLE patients. A retrospective conducted in our hospital showed the 180 days mortality rate of SLE with acute pulmonary complication was as high as 10.5%, but in patients received bronchoalveolar lavage, which helped distinguish the etiology of pulmonary hemorrhage from pulmonary infection or immune mediated. The mortality rate improved substantially to 0.58% after etiologies confirmation.

We dedicate to improve the medical care and treat patient as family. Due to our performance, we were qualified as 2018 APLAR (The Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology) Center of excellence for Research, Training and Education and Patient care.
