The physician, Yen-Po Wang, from the Endoscopy Center for Diagnosis and Treatment, has won second place in the "Physician Academic Paper Award" for his study with psychiatrist Mu-Hung Chen on the "Inflammatory bowel disease is associated with higher dementia risk: a nationwide longitudinal study." According to Dr. Wang, inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, is a chronic autoimmune intestinal inflammation disease. The study using National Health Insurance Database of Taiwan found that the rate of dementia in Taiwanese patients over 45 years old with inflammatory bowel disease was higher at 5.5% compared to the control group without the disease at 1.4%, and the age of onset was younger, with an average of 76.24 years, occurring seven years earlier than the control group, particularly in Alzheimer's disease. Analysis of the 16-year follow-up data showed a significant increase in the risk of dementia with a trend that became more significant with increasing follow-up time, rising to 2.54 times that of the control group, which is consistent with the chronic inflammatory nature of inflammatory bowel disease. The gut-brain axis and chronic inflammation may play an important role in the progressive cognitive decline, and further research is needed to explore the relationship between gut inflammation and cognitive decline and develop new treatment approaches. For elderly patients with inflammatory bowel disease, it is important to be vigilant about cognitive impairment, and early intervention to slow disease progression can significantly improve their quality of life.
