Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology

Clinical Elective Program for Foreign Medical Students

Introduction

At the establishment of the hospital, Ophthalmology was one division of Surgery Department. It became an independent unit in 1975 and evolved into Ophthalmology Department in 1989. It is the first unit in Taiwan that developed microsurgery for cataract and placed the first intraocular lens in Taiwan. It is also one of the medical centers that introduced fluorescein angiography into Taiwan and the first one experienced in pathological diagnosis in ophthalmology. During the past years, we continued to progress in three aspects, including clinical service, medical education, and research in clinical and experimental science.

In addition to general ophthalmology, we provide outpatient services in several subspecialty fields, including cornea, uveitis, oculoplasty and reconstruction, neuro- ophthalmology, glaucoma and retina. We are equipped with many computerized and digitalized instruments that provide comprehensive eye examinations: fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green angiography, computerized automated perimetry, optical coherence tomography, IOL master, and Obscan et al. We provide laser treatment to various eye diseases by using different laser modalities including argon laser, Nd-YAG laser, Diode laser and PASCAL wave scanning laser. The four operation rooms used by our ophthalmology staff serve the patients coming from all parts of Taiwan who seek for advanced and delicate treatment for their eye diseases.
