Clinical Elective Program for International Medical Students

November 2015

Introduction

The Division of Colon & Rectal Surgery in the Department of Surgery at Taipei Veterans General Hospital was founded in 1958. Currently, there are about 2,500 operations per year, including 700 colorectal cancers, 900 anal disease and some other diseases. The number of colonoscopy examination and procedures was around 10,000 every year. The case number and quality of care are at the forefront of patient care.

We have 10 attending surgeons, 4 nurse practitioners, 3 case managers, 2 enterostomal therapists , along with trainees.  We not only provide holistic care to our patients, but also comprehensive environment for clinical learning. In addition to clinical service and teaching, we also have advance in academic research and technique.

In the Visiting Medical Student program, we offer students the clinical experience as members of a medical team and join the conferences highlighting new developments and trends in colon and rectal practice and research.

Learning Objectives

  1. Familiarize with colon and rectal surgical patient evaluation: history taking and physical examination, interpretation of laboratory results, formulating of differential diagnoses.
  2. Understand the indications and contraindication of surgical management and intervention.
  3. Engaged in teamwork, closely collaborating with other experts.
  4. Understand and practice evidence-based medicine.

Tentative Schedule

The student will engage in an integral part of the team:

  1. They make pre-rounds on the assigned patients, attend morning and afternoon rounds with the colorectal surgery team.
  2. They observe the surgical procedures, colonoscopy, functional evaluation.
  3. They attend to our Colon and Rectal Surgery Clinics.
  4. They could observe patient evaluations and management in the consultation session.
  5. They attend to all academic event and Grand Rounds/Mortality and Morbidity Conference in the Department of Surgery.
