Clinical Elective Program for Foreign Medical Students

Introduction

The Division of Pediatric Surgery in the Department of Surgery at Taipei Veterans General Hospital is at the forefront of patient care, clinical innovation and research in the field of pediatric surgery and liver transplantation.

In addition to surgical management of various congenital, gastrointestinal, pulmonary, urogenital disorders, we are most renowned for our pediatric liver transplantation program, which is in close collaboration with the Division of Transplant Surgery, and the Division of Genetics & Metabolism and Division of Gastroenterology in the Department of Pediatric Medicine.

Learning Objectives

  1. Familiarize with pediatric surgical patient evaluation: history taking and physical examination, interpretation of laboratory results, formulating of differential diagnoses.
  2. Understand the indications of surgical management.
  3. Perform teamwork, closely collaborating with other experts.
  4. Understand and practice evidence-based medicine.

Available Supervisors

There are currently two experienced attending surgeons:

Division Chief: Prof. Chin-Su Liu

Attending surgeon: Dr. Hsin-Lin Tsai

Tentative Schedule

The student functions as an integral part of the team:

  1. They make pre-rounds on the assigned patients, attend morning and afternoon rounds with the Pediatric Surgery Team.
  2. They attend and observe all pediatric surgical procedures (routine operation days are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays), including pediatric and adult liver transplantations.
  3. They attend to our Pediatric Surgery Clinics on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  4. They observe patient evaluations in the Emergency Department.
  5. They attend to all academic functions in the Division of Pediatric Surgery, and Grand Rounds/Mortality and Morbidity Conference in the Department of Surgery.
