Clinical Elective Program for Foreign Medical Students

Introduction

The field of Thoracic Surgery mostly includes surgery for lung cancer, surgery for esophageal cancer, surgery for mediastinal tumor, pleural diseases, chest trauma, esophageal function and gastroesophageal disease. With the advancement of endoscopic instruments and techniques, around 80% of thoracic operations in our Division can be performed by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). We also have a lung transplantation team and meeting regarding lung transplantation potential donor and reciepient on a regular basis. We have 7 qualified and well experienced thoracic surgeons, including two professors and two associate professors. We also conduct panendosocpy and bronchoscopy for surgical patients who need inspection or biopsy for thoracic diseases including esophageal cnacer and lung cancer. We also provide esophageal functional examination such as manometry and 24-hour PH monitor for diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux diseases and other esophageal functional disorders.

Learning Objectives

1. Learn the thoracic diseases and practice some simple surgical techniques in the operative room, postoperative care for thoracic surgical patients.

2. Know the surgical indications for thoracic diseases including lung cancer, esophageal cancer, mediastinal diease and pleural diseases. .

3. Perform clinical practice and procedures including tube thoracostomy, pig-tail drainage and port-A implantation.

WEEK ONE

1. Participate in resident work rounds & attending teaching/management rounds.

2. Enter operative room, observe operation and practice minor surgical technique if feasible

3. Attend thoracic oncology combined meeting and journal meetings.

4. Visit panendoscopy and bronchoscopy rooms

 

WEEK TWO

1. Participate in resident work rounds & attending teaching/management rounds.

2. Enter operative room, observe operation and practice minor surgical technique if feasible

3. Attend thoracic oncology combined meeting and journal meetings.

4. Visit panendoscopy and bronchoscopy rooms

5. Observe esophageal function tests including manometry and 24-hour PH monitor.

 

WEEK THREE (selective)

1. Participate in resident work rounds & attending teaching/management rounds.

2.  Enter operative room, observe operation and practice minor surgical technique if feasible

3. Attend thoracic oncology combined meeting and journal meetings.

4. Visit panendoscopy and bronchoscopy rooms

5. Observe esophageal function tests including manometry and 24-hour PH monitor.

 

WEEK FOUR (selective)

1. Participate in resident work rounds & attending teaching/management rounds.

2. Enter operative room, observe operation and practice minor surgical technique if feasible

3. Attend thoracic oncology combined meeting and journal meetings.

Assessment

MINI-CEX and DOPS(Direct Observation of Procedural Skills) judged and rated by supervisors
