Clinical Elective Program for International Medical Students

Introduction

The Department of Psychiatry in Taipei Veterans General Hospital is one of the leaders in Asia Psychiatry. There are four divisions: general psychiatry, child-adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry and rehabilitation psychiatry.

There are 99 beds in the acute inpatient ward, 80 beds in the adult day ward, and 50 beds in the child-adolescent day ward, and 7500 patients/month in the outpatient clinics. We have 20 full time specialist psychiatrists, including 15 attending physicians (two full-professors, two associate professors, and 6 assistant professors) and five research fellows. Other five affiliated senior professors or consultants also involve in the clinical service and teaching training work actively. Our department is in the Taiwan leadership of research in Neuroimaging, molecular genetics, r-TMS neurostimulation treatments, and clinical –epidemiological study.

Learning Objectives

1. Learn and practice how to take integrated patient history, psychiatric diagnostic interview, diagnostic formulation and bio-psych-social treatments.

2. Learn the knowledge of psychopharmacology and clinical skills, such as violence/ suicide evaluation and management.

3. Learn how to be a leader in the multi-discipline psychiatric team work.

3. Perform evidence-based practice, and participate the psychiatric research work.

3. Visit the psychiatric clinics.

4. Visit the ECT or rTMS treatment.
 

WEEK THREE--FOUR (selective)

1. Participate in resident work rounds & attending teaching/management rounds.

2. Attend psychiatric core-lectures and meetings.

3. Visit the psychiatric clinics

4. Participate in psychiatric consultation with supervisors.

5. Participate the research meetings.
